Description
The Obelisk of Theodosius is an ancient Egyptian obelisk that was erected in the Hippodrome of Constantinople (now Sultanahmet Square) in Istanbul, Turkey, in the 4th century AD. The obelisk was originally erected in the Temple of Karnak in Egypt by Pharaoh Thutmosis III in the 15th century BC. It was transported to Constantinople by the Roman Emperor Theodosius I in 390 AD.
The obelisk is made of red granite and is 25.6 meters (84 feet) tall. It is decorated with hieroglyphs that praise Pharaoh Thutmosis III. The obelisk is one of the most iconic landmarks in Istanbul and is a popular tourist destination.
