Hagia Sophia, also known as Ayasofya, is a mosque and museum in Istanbul, Türkiye. It was built in the 6th century as a church by the Byzantine Empire and was the largest church in the world for nearly a thousand years. After the Ottoman Empire conquered Constantinople in 1453, it was converted into a mosque. In 1934, it was secularized and turned into a museum.
Hagia Sophia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Türkiye. The building is known for its large dome, which is supported by four massive pillars. The interior is decorated with intricate mosaics and marblework.
